J. Paul Yurkanin, MD, FACS

Dr. Yurkanin earned his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York in 1992. From there, he went on to study medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and graduated in 1996. After medical school, he served two years as a General Surgery resident at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA, followed by four years as a Urology resident at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, AZ. In addition to residency training, Dr. Yurkanin completed a one year Endourology and Laparoscopic Urology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Following completion of his fellowship training, Dr. Yurkanin returned to Tucson where he founded Arizona Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery (AMIUS) in 2003. The goals of AMIUS are to utilize advanced robotic, laparoscopic, and endoscopic surgical techniques to treat various urologic conditions. In particular, AMIUS focuses on treating urologic cancers, congenital urinary tract diseases such as ureteropelvic junction obstruction, urinary tract stone disease, and benign prostate enlargement.

Dr. Yurkanin was board certified by the American Board of Urology in February, 2005 and recertified in October, 2013. He became a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons in October, 2008. He currently holds the title of Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery in the Section of Urology from the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He regularly participates in medical student and resident education. He also conducts clinical research in minimally invasive surgical techniques and has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Yurkanin has won numerous awards and accolades for both teaching and research. He serves as a reviewer of manuscripts for the Journal of Endourology.

Currently, Dr. Yurkanin is an active member of the Endourological Society, American Urological Association (AUA), the Western Section of the AUA, and the American College of Surgeons. He has lectured nationally and internationally to physicians, researchers, and other medical practitioners on the management of urologic cancers such as prostate and kidney cancer, urinary tract stone disease, and minimally invasive surgical therapies.

Also, Dr. Yurkanin serves or has served in several leadership roles at Tucson Medical Center. He is a past member of the hospital Continuing Medical Education Committee and did hold the positions of Chairman of the Professional Practice Committee, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Chief of the Medical Staff, and Immediate Past Chief of the Medical Staff.
